How we build it

A charging screw works at the worst end of screw conveyor duty: hot, abrasive, intermittent, and loaded against a furnace mouth that radiates back at it. Flights are hardfaced, the shaft is oversized against deflection over the unsupported span, and the drive is rated for repeated stall-and-start rather than continuous running. The discharge spout is built as a replaceable item because it is the first thing to go.

How long can a charging screw be without an intermediate bearing?

It depends on shaft diameter and flight loading, but the span is limited by deflection rather than strength — an intermediate hanger bearing inside a hot charging screw is a liability, so the shaft is sized to avoid one. Send us the furnace mouth height and charge weight and we will work it out.

What material is the flight hardfaced with?

A chromium-carbide overlay on the leading face and outer edge, applied after forming. It is a consumable — the point is that the flight can be re-faced rather than replaced.
