Screw Conveyor Capacity & Power Calculator
Capacity and power from screw diameter, shaft diameter, pitch, speed and trough fill.
How this calculator works
Capacity is the annular area between the screw outside diameter and the centre shaft, multiplied by pitch, rotational speed, the fill fraction and a factor for the incline. Power is the sum of three parts: the horizontal power to move the material against the trough, the power to turn the empty screw, and the power to lift the material where the conveyor is inclined.
Formulas used
Q = 47.1 × (D² − d²) × P × n × λ × C (m³/h)P_H = Q × ρ × L × λ_m ÷ 367P_N = D × L ÷ 20P_st = Q × ρ × H ÷ 367Checked against
A 250 mm screw at 45 rpm with 30% trough fill returns 9.0 m³/h, which agrees with the standard capacity tables.
Worth knowing
Practical motor selection normally runs 1.5–2× the calculated figure. Starting against a flooded trough needs far more torque than steady running, and this is the most common reason a screw conveyor stalls in service.
