Belt Conveyor Capacity & Power Calculator
Throughput and an indicative motor rating, from width, speed, trough angle, length and lift.
How this calculator works
Capacity is built from the cross-sectional area of material the belt can carry. The three-roll troughed section from DIN 22101 gives the theoretical area from belt width, trough angle and surcharge angle. That theoretical figure is then derated twice — by a fill factor for real loading conditions, and by an incline reduction factor interpolated from the angle implied by lift ÷ length. Power comes from the friction resistance along the carry and return runs plus the work done lifting the material, and the result is rounded up to the next standard motor frame.
Formulas used
Q_v = A × v × 3600 (m³/h)Q_m = Q_v × ρ ÷ 1000 (TPH)Q = Q_theoretical × fill factor × incline factorP_lift = Q × H × 9.81 ÷ 3600P_f = f × L × (2·m_belt + m_load) × v × 9.81 ÷ 1000Checked against
An 800 mm belt at 35° trough and 20° surcharge gives a theoretical section of 0.0836 m², which matches the DIN 22101 tabulated value.
Worth knowing
Capacity is derated by a fill factor of 0.85 by default. Above 18° incline the calculator warns that a plain belt will not hold the load and a cleated or chevron belt is needed.
