How this calculator works

Straight conversion between the units that come up daily on a fabrication floor — length, mass, pressure, power, torque, flow, area and temperature. Temperature is handled separately because it needs an offset as well as a scale factor. The tap drill table below gives the ISO metric coarse tapping drill and the clearance drill for each thread size.

Formulas used

Tapping drill (approx.)d = D − P
Celsius to Fahrenheit°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
Celsius to KelvinK = °C + 273.15
Horsepower to kilowattkW = HP × 0.7457

Checked against

5 HP converts to 3.729 kW.

Worth knowing

Tapping drill sizes are for ISO metric coarse threads at approximately 75% thread engagement, which is the normal workshop compromise between thread strength and tap breakage.

Unit Converter & Tap Drill Chart — common questions

What drill size for an M10 tap?
8.5 mm for ISO metric coarse (M10 × 1.5). The rule of thumb is drill diameter = thread diameter minus pitch, which gives about 75% thread engagement.
How do I convert HP to kW?
Multiply by 0.7457. A 5 HP motor is 3.729 kW, which is why it is normally sold as a 3.7 kW frame.
